From its 1980s launch, the Chronomat collection has been best known for its use of Breitling's signature ratcheted bezel with its four projecting riders. The look was designed to assist pilots more easily grip the bezel while wearing gloves. The design was carried on from its initial introduction in the 1980s as part of the original Navitimer Chronomat timepiece (later just Chronomat), at the time representing a firm replacement for the, at that point, technologically outdated slide-rule scale. The signature bezel is now frequently seen as a standard feature within the brand's catalogue, in this model using a unidirectional 60-minute engraved scale to meet the chronograph's ability for versatile functionality.
