The Rolex Air-King, often overlooked in the Rolex sports lineup, has historical roots stretching back to before World War II. The iconic Rolex Oyster case, a staple across models like the Datejust and Daytona, sees subtle variations in shape through different models and eras. The Air-King reference 14000, produced from 1989 to 1999, follows the reference 5500, which had a remarkably long production run of 31 years, one of the longest for any Rolex model. A notable update in the Rolex design is the lugs, especially the shift towards thicker lugs in modern models around 2012, making the slender and sharp lugs of the 14000 model a nod to a more "classic" style.

The dial features hour markers with small dots of Tritium, which, intriguingly, remain luminous over 20 years later with exposure to sunlight, marked by “T Swiss T” to indicate the Tritium content. This represents the end of Rolex's use of trace radioactive materials, transitioning to LumiNova in the 2000s for their dials.
